How to Brighten Your Bedroom
— August 16, 2012As women, we all go through phases where we become obsessed with certain people and things- like our taste in men, movies, fashion and hair styles, and even food. Then, we eventually outgrow them and get to a point where we decide it’s time for a change. The same applies to our taste in décor and interior design. If you’re no longer that comfortable in your room, or think it’s become too dull and dark, change things up a little and try out these tips on how to brighten your boudoir.
Change Wall Colors
Repainting the walls is always the go-to solution for those who want to give their room a new look and feel. If you have dark walls, simply replacing the colors with lighter, more vibrant hues will already work wonders to brighten up your room. If you’re not that sure about repainting everything, try doing so with just one wall. This will help you decide if the color looks right before you do the rest of the walls, or keep it that way as an accent wall.
Add Mirrors and Sparkly Things
We already know how mirrors work great in creating an illusion of a bigger space. But if your main goal is to brighten up the room, their reflective surfaces are also effective in diffusing light and directing visual flow. Before you start making permanent changes, try experimenting with mirrors first. This way, you can avoid unnecessary purchases and incur less electricity costs by making use of the light sources you already have in your room.
Tweak the Lighting
One of the cheaper solutions to brightening your bedroom is to replace your existing bulbs with higher intensity ones to spread out the light in the room. However, make sure you also consider how you use your room – where you read, work, and rest. Bulbs emit different tones, so you’d want to use calmer, yellowish hues for areas where you relax and unwind, and cooler, more vivid colors for spots where you do visually strenuous activities.
If you do decide to install new lighting, it’s also very important to consider where the shadows will fall. You should also look into diffused lighting, especially for walls and dark corners where you don’t need strong light but could use illumination.
Brighten By Contrast
If you already have bright color accents (furniture, pillows, curtains, etc.) in your room, you can also consider adding black or darker items to highlight their colors. Brightening up a room isn’t just about using as many light and vibrant colors, sometimes the trick is in knowing how to accentuate the hues and shades and thus make them stand out when you look around.
If you’re using bright and matching solid-colored beddings, you can easily liven up your bed by using darker colors or shades for your pillowcases. And if you have wall art pieces, put them in black frames to make the colors pop.
