Dressing With Style… Without Breaking The Bank
— November 15, 2017
Most women get a high from a little “retail therapy”, however, they may also come crashing down when the bills start flowing in. Well, you don’t have to empty your wallet in order to dress fashionably and look great. You don’t even have to be the savviest shopper – all you need to do is follow these simple tips and you’ll be dressing with style and confidence in no time.
Evaluate Your Wardrobe:
- Take an inventory of your current wardrobe and make a list of what you feel is missing
- Ensure you have enough timeless staples to create a solid foundation for your wardrobe i.e. black pants & skirt, little black dress, a white blouse, basic camis, a cardigan or blazer, a great pair of jeans, etc.
- Declutter your wardrobe by giving away or donating any items you haven’t worn in the last year (this will also make room for the new arrivals!)
- Make a shopping list of the items you want to purchase:
- Include items that will coordinate with what you currently own
- Add some quality and classic pieces that will last
- Establish a budget for your list
- Spend more on items you will wear longer i.e. jeans, coat, classic cardigan, etc.
- Be more frugal with those that will quickly go out of fashion
- Only buy what you need (OK, maybe also a couple of items you really, really want!)
Get Inspired:
- Know what styles and colours flatter you best
- Look on-line at the latest trends to see what appeals to your personal sense of style
- Choose a variety of key pieces, including accessories, that will work for your lifestyle
- Print pictures of the items you like for reference (or create a board on Pinterest to create your virtual wardrobe)
Know Where To Shop For The Best Deals:
- Flash Sale websites such as Gilt, Beyond the Rack, Haute Look or Rue La La – these websites offer designer brands at steep discounts (but you have to be fast – most sales last only 48 hours)
- Shop the outlet and discount stores
- Shop your favorite retailers when they go on sale – all stores have clearance sales and many will notify you about upcoming events (bonus tip: if you make friends with a sales associate, you can ask her to put aside items she knows you will like)
- Try shopping at a vintage or second-hand store
- Shop online and look for promotion codes – I never make a purchase without first searching (and nearly always finding) a promo code that applies
- Check locally to find out about designer sample sales
- Purchase items out of season
Start Shopping:
- Have fun
- Look fabulous
- Save money
- Feel smart
More than just a retail therapy high!
