Caring for your Knives

Caring for your Knives

Although some cutting boards, such as hardwood boards, keep your knives in good shape, it takes proper care and maintenance to make them last. Here are the tips and tricks you need to ensure the longevity of your knives.

Respect your Knives

If you don’t respect it, it will break. Even though they are made to last a lifetime, without proper respect, they can dull, rust or break. Without a sharp, sturdy kitchen knife, it is nearly impossible to create almost any dish.

Use your Knives with Caution.

There are certain ways to handle a sharp knife to keep everyone in the kitchen safe. Following are a few tips to properly move about with a knife.

  • Always pass a knife to someone by extended the handle towards them.
  • Always walk with the knife to your side and pointing downwards with the blade facing behind you. Make sure to declare you are walking with a sharp object for others to stay clear.
  • Always use a cover on the blade of your knife or store it in a knife block when not in use.
  • When placing a knife on your counter for a brief second, always make sure the blade is pointing inward, and the knife is far enough from the edge.
  • Never leave your knife in the sink.

Sharpening your Knives

The best way to ensure your knife never becomes blunt is to sharpen it before every use. Hold your honing steel at a 45o angle. Starting from the bottom of the blade and moving towards the top, slide your knife upwards across the steel. Make sure you do this with both sides of your knife.
