Can Imperfections Make You Beautiful?

Beautiful imperfection is the name of an album by the Nigerian pop soul sensation Asa and the idea behind the music is to allow those who have listened to it to feel uplifted. Asa stated in an interview that her life was beautiful because of the imperfections within it and the unexpected life-changing events within her life made her feel humble

The acceptance of imperfection, and the celebration thereof, is also conveyed by the Japanese aesthetic, Wabi-sabi, which refers to modesty and loneliness as an imperfect individual. The concept refers to a beauty that is incomplete, imperfect and impermanent.

Poems and songs regarding loneliness or broken hearts, all express an aesthetic sentiment of incompleteness that may be venerated by many worldwide. Perhaps the most notable is that of the Beatles’ famous album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

There is no shortage of creative works inspired by imperfection and beautified by audiences across the globe. These are imperfections of an inner being, but beautiful imperfections may be made physical too.  Pregnant women radiate attractiveness of imminent birth. Yet pregnancy is a changing impermanent aesthetic.

Beautiful Physical Imperfections

There are some imperfections that occur naturally, such, as facial dimples, freckles and birthmarks. Many consider these types of imperfections to be beautiful. These imperfections are accepted and loved so much that some even undergo cosmetic surgery for dimple creation. Others lie in the sun to bring out the freckle pigments in their skin.

Even distinctive smile lines like Richard Gere’s can give character.  While some prefer to have Botox and derma fillers to remove wrinkles, some people celebrate their ageing. Mr Bean is another example of displaying great facial characteristics, using his deep facial lines for comedic purposes.

Everyone has different perceptions regarding hair too. Some perm hair because they view straight hair as imperfection. Others straighten their hair because they feel curls are an imperfection. Many choose to dye their hair red because they find red hair, a recessive gene trait, stunning. Others love blondes. Men even have grey flecks placed into their hair at a young age because they feel the ‘silver fox’ look is appealing. Undergoing operations to change eye colour from brown to blue is a similar thing.

Physical imperfections have taken people to the Olympics where they partake in Para-Olympic sports. Attitudes about imperfections and beauty make us realize that beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder, whether beholding oneself or another.

Although initiated by the stars, people in all walks of life are now having cosmetic surgery or treatments to gain imperfect beauty. Treatments range from chin and dimpleplasty to changing the colour of the iris or creating an appealing belly button. The belly button is in essence a scar from the tying of the umbilical cord. While some of us have sunken ones, others’ protrude.

Yes, imperfections can make you beautiful

Imperfections can make you beautiful if beauty is what you see. How others perceive imperfection may also make your imperfection beautiful. Consider actors and actresses that put on weight to be jovial characters in plays and films loved by those who go to see their performance. Imperfections add character and a unique beauty of their own.
