Ahh…time for a break during the holiday madness. And what could be better than a relaxing evening with your girlfriends, complete with yummy snacks, wine and movies to watch—or to have playing in the background as you catch up.

In no particular order, here are five great movies to choose from for your next girls’ night in:

Home for the Holidays (1995):Hail the holiday season, with all the joys and miseries of enforced family gatherings. Holly Hunter is the long-suffering woman going back to the family home in Baltimore for Thanksgiving, with all the craziness that entails. You can dish about your own trials with your families and in-laws.

In Her Shoes (2005):How can you go wrong with a love-hate relationship between two sisters, played by Toni Collette (the serious one) and Cameron Diaz (the screw-up), and lots of fabulous shoes? This is based on a Jennifer Weiner novel—share copies of all her books with the girls for an impromptu book club.

The Devil Wears Prada (2006):If you and your girlfriends love paging through fashion mags, you’ll get a kick out of this romp through the fashion world, with amazing clothes and Meryl Streep as Anne Hathaway’s wonderfully nightmarish boss.

Sex and the City (2008):The perfect wrap-up to all those seasons of the TV show. And if you never saw those, plan some box-set marathons with the girls, as you must start from the beginning to see how a wonderful friendship between four very different women evolves. This is primo girlfriend material.

The Proposal (2009):Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds have good chemistry in this romantic comedy: Two people who start out by disliking each other are forced to pretend they’re engaged, with some great scenery and lots of fun—as would be expected with Betty White co-starring. Destined to become a classic chick-flick.
